Here&#8217;s How To Turn Photos Into A Comic Strip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a deconstruction of techniques I used to turn photographic images into a comic strip, using only filters and adjustment layers, with the final result emulating ink on gouache. Photoshop familiarity is recommended for this demonstration. <!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Step 1: Modifying the photos<\/h2>\n<p>The original images are screen captures of a scene from the TV sitcom, Parks &amp; Recreation. This is a great starting point since these images are dark and muted.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_193\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-193\" style=\"width: 995px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-193\" src=\"http:\/\/articles.mattinglydesign.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2-shadowhighlight.jpg\" alt=\"Shadows\/Highlights bring clarity to shadows of a dark image.\" width=\"995\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2-shadowhighlight.jpg 995w, https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2-shadowhighlight-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/2-shadowhighlight-768x320.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 995px) 100vw, 995px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shadows\/Highlights helps bring muddy detail closer to the midtone range.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Levels<\/h3>\n<p>Color levels were adjusted with Auto Tone <code>Image &gt; Auto Tone<\/code>, then the Levels dialog box <code>Image &gt; Adjustments &gt; Levels...<\/code>. This neutralizes shadow &amp; highlight tones, and brightens midtones.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_115\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115\" style=\"width: 995px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-115\" src=\"http:\/\/articles.mattinglydesign.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/3-levels.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"995\" height=\"415\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-115\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Levels improves contrast, and brings clarity to what was otherwise a muddy image.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Unsharp Mask<\/h3>\n<p>The line art effect takes shape with Unsharp Mask <code>Filter &gt; Sharpen &gt; Unsharp Mask...<\/code> at a very high setting. This creates a &#8220;halo&#8221; effect around edge detail, which forces adjacent pixels to increase contrast. The background and jacket were masked, then adjustment layers applied to&nbsp;both.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_215\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-215\" style=\"width: 995px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-215\" src=\"http:\/\/articles.mattinglydesign.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/5-jacket_background_color.jpg\" alt=\"The muted colors of Ron Swanson's clothing were converted to a primary color to give him better contrast with the background and better emulate comic art.\" width=\"995\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/5-jacket_background_color.jpg 995w, https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/5-jacket_background_color-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/5-jacket_background_color-768x320.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 995px) 100vw, 995px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-215\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Additional modifications visually emphasize the subject with bolder colors and a muted background.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>These steps are repeated for the other two panels.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Action enhancements<\/h3>\n<p>Ron Swanson pumps his fist in triumph after his absurd demand is granted, so we&#8217;re driving that point home by highlighting the action. For this, a couple of vector graphics were added over the background.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_192\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-192\" style=\"width: 995px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-192\" src=\"http:\/\/articles.mattinglydesign.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/6-actionpieces.jpg\" alt=\"Graphic elements, including rays line art and a dot pattern were added to the background of the third panel to help convey action.\" width=\"995\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/6-actionpieces.jpg 995w, https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/6-actionpieces-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/6-actionpieces-768x320.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 995px) 100vw, 995px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graphic elements were added to the background of the third panel to help convey action.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Action elements layer blending<\/h3>\n<p>The dots and rays look pretty lame as-is, so I blended these layers&nbsp;&nbsp;<code>Layer &gt; Layer Style &gt; Blending Options...<\/code>&nbsp;into the background. Photoshop&#8217;s layer blending capabilities&nbsp;are a powerful tool for mixing foreground and background objects without requiring complicated masks or filters.<\/p>\n<p>I kept the color palette fairly simple for this comic strip: mostly blues, greens, and yellows. To offset Ron Swanson&#8217;s blue jacket, I added a yellow-green color overlay <code>Layer &gt; New Fill Layer &gt; Solid Color...<\/code> above the background graphics, and blended through all three channels (red, green and blue) to mix it in with underlying elements.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_189\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-189\" style=\"width: 995px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-189\" src=\"http:\/\/articles.mattinglydesign.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/7-actionlayersblending.jpg\" alt=\"Advanced layer blending was used within the channels of each layer to mix colors with the background.\" width=\"995\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/7-actionlayersblending.jpg 995w, https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/7-actionlayersblending-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/7-actionlayersblending-768x320.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 995px) 100vw, 995px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-189\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Advanced layer blending was used within the channels of each layer to mix colors with the background.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 2: Assembling the story<\/h2>\n<h3>Create a new document<\/h3>\n<p>Everything is put together in a new layout document: <code>File &gt; New...<\/code>. I replicated &nbsp;newspaper with a new fill layer <code>Edit &gt; Fill...<\/code>. I gave this an off-white color and light paper texture with a pattern&nbsp;<code>Layer &gt; Layer Style &gt; Pattern Overlay...<\/code>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_188\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-188\" style=\"width: 995px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-188\" src=\"http:\/\/articles.mattinglydesign.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/8-comicstripdocument.jpg\" alt=\"The comic strip is assembled in a new document with a newspaper texture background.\" width=\"995\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/8-comicstripdocument.jpg 995w, https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/8-comicstripdocument-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/8-comicstripdocument-768x320.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 995px) 100vw, 995px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-188\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A new document is created to assemble the comic strip, using a color fill and texture to emulate newspaper substrate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Laying out the story panels<\/h3>\n<p>Next, each panel was copied into the comic strip panel:<br \/>\n<code>Select &gt; All<\/code>,&nbsp;<code>Edit &gt; Copy Merged<\/code>, then&nbsp;<code>Edit &gt; Paste<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>Then they were resized, cropped with layer masks, aligned, and outlined with a layer stroke. First, I wanted to have Ron Swanson&#8217;s head extend out of the frame: in the original video still the top of his head is cropped out, but this is made possible by cloning details from the first frame and adjusting as needed.<\/p>\n<p>Also, stink lines were added on a separate layer to accentuate the fist pump, using the Brush Tool.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_182\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-182\" style=\"width: 995px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-182\" src=\"http:\/\/articles.mattinglydesign.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/12-actionenhancements.jpg\" alt=\"Enhancements to an action panel, including motion lines and cloning to extend artwork outside of frame.\" width=\"995\" height=\"415\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A couple of enhancements were added to the last panel to add emphasis. This includes extending the character&#8217;s head out of the panel and motion lines.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Emulating offset printing on newspaper<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, I added two more layers to emulate the look of a printed comic. For 4-color process offset printing, anything that is white is really the substrate. Newspaper is also pretty absorbent, so paper fiber shows through. This was easily accomplished by copying the paper texture layer, and positioning above all other layers.<\/p>\n<p>Also, I added a mask to the second panel&#8217;s speech balloon to recede it into the frame.
