A great logo tells you their story. As a series, Silicon Valley serves up wicked satire of tech culture and its namesake region, packed with inside jokes and easter eggs. As a story, the fictional company Pied Piper&#8217;s trajectory informs their brand, which routinely morphs as the startup evolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"one wp-block-heading\">Pied Piper 1.0 and 1.5<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pied Piper&#8217;s growing pains are immediately apparent, with an entire episode dedicated to spoofing many tech startup chestnuts, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Their legal incorporation, and cutting a deal with the irate owner of an irrigation company.<\/strong> <br>Trademark lawsuits happen all the time, and name rights to some of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.cisco.com\/news\/cisco_and_apple_agreement_on_ios_trademark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the most influential products in history<\/a><i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i> have had to fight for it in court.<\/li><li><strong>A brainstorm session for a new name only produces incomprehensible &#8220;compressed&#8221; words (does &#8220;SMLR&#8221; = &#8220;smaller&#8221;&#8230; or &#8220;smiler&#8221;?)<\/strong><br>This parodies tech businesses&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/70206\/silly-tech-company-naming-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">odd fixation on goofy names or dropped vowels<\/a><i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i>. Twitter could have launched as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2013\/11\/12\/5094724\/old-twitter-logos-show-original-names-were-twttr-smssy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Twitch&#8221;, &#8220;twttr&#8221; and &#8220;smssy&#8221;<\/a><i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i>.<\/li><li><strong>Company co-invester Erlich Bachman takes matters in his own hands by going on a drug-induced &#8220;vision quest&#8221;. It&#8217;s a fruitless endeavor resulting in a frivolous observation: &#8220;Technolo-jesus&#8230;? It&#8217;s all just meaningless words!&#8221;<\/strong><br> Silicon Valley&#8217;s infamous hippie drug culture is ripe for parody \u2013 and  a real-life tech mogul did in fact suggest that <a href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an acid trip was &#8220;like being in the presence of Jesus&#8221;<\/a><i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\" class=\"wp-image-483\" style=\"width: 150px; margin:0 0 1em 1.4em; float:right;\" src=\"http:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/pied-piper-tshirt-logo.gif\" alt=\"\">As far as the actual logo: the &#8220;first official purchase of Pied Piper&#8221; was a crappy t-shirt with generic clip art. Erlich later recruits a graffiti artist to paint a new logo on their garage door, only asking for something original. This shortsighted grant of artistic license naturally backfires, and is never seen or used again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both of these rudderless branding attempts are peppered with vulgar humor (this is an R-rated comedy, after all), but that&#8217;s beside the point. A bunch of guys in a room with a groundbreaking product and no vision evokes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/ywgbw5\/apple-third-founder-ronald-wayne-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple&#8217;s original logo<\/a><i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i>: an exceedingly ornate illustration without practicable brand value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"two wp-block-heading\">Pied Piper 2.0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"450\" height=\"550\" class=\"wp-image-509\" style=\"width: 150px; margin:0 0 1em 1.4em; float:right;\" src=\"http:\/\/localhost:8765\/md6\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/pied-piper-2.jpg\" alt=\"pied piper logo with lowercase p's, by Chuy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/pied-piper-2.jpg 450w, https:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/pied-piper-2-245x300.jpg 245w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/> After a visit from law enforcement, Erlich talks the graffiti artist into a revision that &#8220;you white boys might like&#8221;. Which turns out to be generic and uninspired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tech companies have a curious tendency of <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2014\/05\/silicon-valley-fact-check-how-pied-pipers-logo-measures-up-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">lowercase lettered logotypes<\/a><i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i>. As the story goes, the punchline is the &#8220;white boys'&#8221; failure to visually define themselves, and default to a &#8220;safe&#8221; \u2013 albeit vanilla brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"three wp-block-heading\">Pied Piper 3.0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\" class=\"wp-image-516\" style=\"width: 150px; margin:0 0 1em 1.4em; float:right;\" src=\"http:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/pied-piper-3.gif\" alt=\"Pied Piper logo, created during Action Jack Barker's tenure as CEO\">Hired-gun CEO &#8220;Action&#8221; Jack Barker had this version created without consent of the founders. 3.0&#8217;s clean, simplified &#8220;feather and hat&#8221; icon and typeface is a significant step forward as a brand and Pied Piper&#8217;s maturation to a legitimate company. Yet, it is derivative of their direct competitor Hooli&#8217;s brand: a predictable outcome for an unimaginative executive  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/silicon-valley-fact-check-jack-barker-is-steve-balmer-2-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in the vein of a Steve Ballmer<\/a><i class=\"fa fa-external-link\"><\/i>. And, as the limit of Jack Barker&#8217;s &#8220;action&#8221; amounted to aping a competitor, he predictably went to work for them.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"four wp-block-heading\">Pied Piper 4.0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"550\" height=\"160\" class=\"wp-image-524\" style=\"width: 150px; margin:0 0 1em 1.4em; float:right;\" src=\"http:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/pied-piper-4.jpg\" alt=\"Pied Piper's final logo completes the company's story arc\">With only one season left, 4.0 (introduced in season five) is presumably the final version. As a story arc, it&#8217;s the file compression company&#8217;s brand distilled to its purest form. Light and clean with simple letterforms, it reduces the artifice of the &#8220;pied piper&#8221; metaphor down to a simplified feather graphic, subtly showing the company&#8217;s completion of its arc: successfully having gone to market with a peerless product, and no longer bound by fickle investors or indifferent senior executives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>On a final note, I would point out the visual narrative of each logo&#8217;s introduction. When it appears on screen and protagonist Richard Hendricks is facing forward he&#8217;s in charge, literally standing behind his product. When a new logo is introduced and his back is to the camera, he&#8217;s a passive witness to an out of control calamity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of this writing, Silicon Valley still has seven unaired episodes left in the series, so it remains to be seen if Pied Piper will succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nextend-smartslider3\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"footnote\">All Silicon Valley and Pied Piper images are \u00a9<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbo.com\/silicon-valley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Home Box Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A good logo identifies a business.
