So what do you do if you need to illustrate a lot of hair on a furry friend? With Adobe Illustrator, this type of graphic application is a lot easier with its suite of Symbols tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Turning a cat into a literal cartoon character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It all starts with an illustration. Here\u2019s a quick rundown my design process:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nextend-smartslider3\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Hair spray<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Symbols tools allow you to rapidly apply and manipulate large groups of repeating objects, as opposed to tediously modifying individual objects one at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating a Symbol intance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I started with drawing a single hair, and added it to the Symbols panel. This creates an &#8220;instance&#8221;, which is an object that can be manipulated with the Symbols tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"http:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/1-draw-hair-create-symbol.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption>The journey of 1000 hairs begins with a single follicle.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases, when you&#8217;re working with Symbols you&#8217;re going to be constantly switching between tools so it&#8217;s not a bad idea to drag that panel out of the toolbar to the artboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"http:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/2-opening-symbol-tools-lock-layers.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption>Drag the Symbols tools on the artboard for a more efficient workflow.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working with Symbols<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sprayer tool applies objects through particle dispersion (or &#8220;spraying&#8221; them), which is functionally quite a bit different from traditional brush or pen tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After producing a group of Symbols, they can be repositioned, resized and even recolored with additional tools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"note\">Note that double-clicking a Symbol tool opens a dialogue box where you can change settings. Each tool has additional functionality with modifier keys; for example, option-clicking with the Symbol Sprayer will remove instances instead of adding them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"http:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/2-3b-symbol-tools-1.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption>This set of tools has a lot of capability for moving, resizing and recoloring Symbol groups.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rotating a Symbol group<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since straight hair usually lays in a general direction, it&#8217;s not necessary to create new Symbol instances for various angles. I used the Selection tool to rotate a Symbol group, which conforms to its angle on the artboard rather than the reference Symbol&#8217;s original orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"http:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/5-symbol-group-rotated-reorientation.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption>Rotating Symbol groups as regular objects is often more practical than creating new Symbols.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"http:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/6-quick-demo-of-dark-hair-progression.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption>Filling out the rest of the fur in a one minute demo of the tools and techniques described in this article.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Duplicating a Symbol<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For one of the final steps, I needed to add texture to the white fur. With Symbols it&#8217;s easy to duplicate an existing instance and make slight modifications. In this case I rotated the new Symbol since most of my cat&#8217;s white fur appears in a more vertical orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"note\">New Symbols are created by dragging the original to the artboard and breaking its link. Then you modify as needed and copy it back into the panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"http:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/7-duplicating-and-modifying-a-symbol.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption>Symbols can be duplicated and modified as variations of the original. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"http:\/\/mattingly.design\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/8b-light-fur-tint-opacity-finishing-touches-1.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption>Finishing touches: Filling out the white fur texture, and introducing light variation with the Stainer tool and opacity settings.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Symbols are, of course, not a one-click process. While there&#8217;s a lot of craft and some skill involved, it&#8217;s still far easier than herding cats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of which!
